J&B Blended Scotch
The J&B Blended Scotch has a clear, pale gold color when poured, and a sweet, honey aroma. This belies the smokey, peaty flavor held within. You don’t detect this on the nose, so it comes as a bit of a surprise upon the first sip. If you take a touch expecting the honey flavoring of an Irish whiskey from the aroma, you’ll be caught off guard by the heavy smokiness of a good scotch.
The peatiness on the front gives way to the warming honey that the nose implied. It is the sweet, enticing, vanilla flavors, with all the smoothness one would expect from a blend.
The finish gives the obligatory burn of a good whisky, but with a lingering tingle, and the resurgence of the smoke and peat in a not unpleasant aftertaste.
The J&B is an excellent scotch for many occasions. A welcome break from my usual chewy, sweet, bourbons, it is something of upper middle range, dominating the no-mans land of the every day passports and the celebratory single malts. Making this an every day whisky might become an attainable professional goal here in the near future.
