2011 Gnarly Head Merlot

The next entry in my wine series is the 2011 Gnarly Head Merlot.

This California red has a deep, dark color, almost purple that is common to many full merlots. There is very little clarity, as it is too dark to be perfectly clear. There is a deep red around the edges.

The Gnarly Head has a strong, full aroma that is quite fruity, but heavier on the dark fruits, cherry, and currants.

The flavor was a bit of a surprise, as it came off as somewhat dry. The flavor was deep and rich, with heavy tannins throughout, not just at the finish. There were heavy notes of a bitter black cherry.

The Gnarly Head tastes like a merlot – like a dry merlot. I think it is a little too heavy on the tannins to be good on its own. I will probably have to try it with a steak or some strong blue cheese to see if they mellow it out a bit.
